Work Permit

Work Permit

A work permit is a permission document, which permits a foreign national to work in Canada. Although there are many exceptions, but Most foreign nationals need a work permit to work in Canada. There are following two types of work permits:

  • Employer-specific work permit
  • Open work permit

Employer-specific work permit

An employer-specific work permit restricts the permit holders to work in Canada according to the mentioned conditions on their work permit. There could be conditions regarding permission to work for a specific employer, time duration of validity, and a specific geographical area where permitted person can work.

Employer-specific work permits usually need LMIA but there could be exemption as well. If LMIA is required, only employer can apply for it, and if approved, that approval letter need to be included with the application for work permit and Temporary resident permit.

Open work permit

An open work permit permits the foreign national to work in any occupation, for any employer (Some exceptions exist), anywhere within the Canada and for a limited time duration. Although it is not an exclusive list, but an open work permit is usually issued to candidates participating in Post Graduate Work Permit program, spouses of international students, and refugee claimants. An open work permit does not need an LMIA.
